Born out of a Milwaukee Sunday school class in 1957, Shepherds moved into its original facility in 1964 to provide compassionate Christian care to adults with mental disabilities. Since then the lovely 85 plus acre Union Grove campus has grown to embrace a steady stream of new structures, built to accommodate a growing family of residents. Staff members provide the residents with nourishing meals, healthy exercise, wholesome activities, vocational training and employment opportunities, spiritual growth and Christian service. The four residential buildings include the Wood Center, Clark Hall, Cook Cottage, and Lamb Cottage. In addition to the kitchen and dining facilities, the campus features the Bolthouse Center gymnasium/chapel, greenhouse, an infirmary/nursing department, central services building, laundry facility, activity room, vocational workshops and enrichment classrooms. Through SERVE Enterprises, supervised residents work in the environmental services department of a hospital, fast-food restaurant, and housekeeping and kitchen staff of a major hotel. In 2001, SERVE Enterprises opened a 15,000 square foot building for assembly and packaging. The building includes a large work-room, storage rooms and two loading docks. Many residents enjoy sharing their faith through a variety of traveling ministries - singing, playing in the Handbell Choir, reciting verses, or sharing a personal testimony in local churches around the country.
